Toyotarou: Dragon Ball Super 103 Takes on Another Meaning After Akira Toriyama’s Final Correction

Dragon Ball Super manga artist Toyotarou shared Akira Toriyama’s final correction, which came in Dragon Ball Super Chapter 103. First addressing fans about Super‘s hiatus on X (formerly Twitter), Toyotarou said he doesn’t know when the latest volume containing chapters 101-103 will be released. He then shared a reproduction of both his original final page for Chapter 103 and Toriyama’s correction. Readers can check it out below:

As Piccolo flew off with everybody after picking up Pan from school, Toyotarou’s version created an ambient effect, focusing on the sky and environment. Meanwhile, Toriyama’s version saw Piccolo remember Pan’s teacher, before turning and waving back. Captioning the post, Toyotarou said:
Actually, on the last page of Chapter 103 when I drew the rough draft, they all just turned their backs and flew away. To make it look like Piccolo was saying goodbye to the kindergarten teacher – this was Sensei’s last correction.

(*I can’t post the draft without permission, so I redrew it as an image.)

I heard the news of his death after I had submitted the manuscript.

Toyotarou sees a deeper meaning in the panel change in light of Toriyama’s passing:
So I did not draw Piccolo with that intention. But I can’t help but want to add another meaning to it. Mr. Toriyama, thank you very much for your hard work. It was a miracle that I was able to work with you for 9 years. Thank you very much. I pray for your soul to rest in peace.

Toyotarou and Toriyama worked together on Dragon Ball Super from its beginning in June 2015. The artist revealed a heartfelt message to his greatest inspiration, saying on X, “I drew manga because I wanted to be praised by Toriyama-sensei. it was everything to me.” Numerous members of the anime and manga community echoed this sentiment.

Dragon Ball Super is published in Shueisha’s V Jump. VIZ licenses the series for North America, describing the latest Volume 20:
Goku and Vegeta are both struggling to master their respective ultra forms, which they’ll need to defeat Gas, now the strongest warrior in the universe. Can Granolah rejoin the battle and help turn things around? Later, back at home, a pair of superheroes are making headlines! Get ready for a new story arc set on Earth!
