YAIBA (stylized as Y∀IBA) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by the veteran Gosho Aoyama, who is also known as the creator of Magic Kaito and Case Closed/Detective Conan. The manga was serialized in Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday from September 1988 to December 1993. Its first anime adaptation was animated by studio Pastel and ran for 52 episodes from April 1993 to April 1994.
The official website describes the story:
Yaiba Kurogane Yaiba, who was training in the jungle with the goal of becoming a true samurai, returns to Japan due to an unexpected turn of events. He takes shelter with the Mine family, who have a connection with his father, Kenjuro. Despite being confused by Yaiba’s reckless behavior, Sayaka, the daughter of the Mine family, begins living with him.
One day, Yaiba visits Sayaka’s school, where he has a fateful encounter with a skilled kendo practitioner, Takeshi Onimaru. Yaiba and Onimaru clash repeatedly, and, as if in response to their pursuit of strength, an ancient power awakens.
The “Raijin Sword” and “Fujin Sword,” demonic swords that have shaken the heavens and earth since ancient times, awaken once more, signaling the beginning of a true story.
