The Process Behind The Case Of Vanitas
Studio Bones took the time to design the show’s aesthetics to become the best it can be. The studios’ attention to detail is present in the setting and character designs.
What’s more, the show’s process begins with the series composition, which screenwriter Deko Akao handles. The studio can figure out how much of the story can be in that timeframe by breaking the series episodes down—allowing Bones to control the show’s pacing.
Additionally, the storyboards help to illustrate the character’s movements which act as blueprints for the episode. Although some of the storyboards are faithful to the book, the anime adaptation has set-ups to make the manga moments happen fluidly. However, some moments differ from the manga visually to look more appealing, such as the action scenes.
The character designs were also drawn to animate as if they were three-dimensional entirely. Furthermore, the studio asked the creator if they can add some extra flair to the character designs for the animations. Although they also maintained the spirit of the author’s intentions.
The show’s color direction is firmly based on the manga’s colors while still having the director’s approval and animation in mind. The studio also took the time to use color to evoke emotion, such as red being passionate.

The mysterious doctor has inherited both the name and the infamous text from the Vanitas of legend, using the grimoire to heal his patients.
