Fruits Basket: Prelude anime film has earned over 33 million yen (~US$287 000) on the first two days of the showing. The movie started screening on February 18, 2022, in 25 Japanese theatres.
Fruits Basket: Prelude is a prequel movie to the Fruits Basket original series. The story revolves around Tohru’s parents, Katsuy (C.V. Yoshimasa Hosoya), and Kyoko (C.V. Miyuki Sawahiro). The film also contains an epilogue, which is set after the events of the main series. TMS Entertainment (Rent a Girlfriend) animated the show, while Yoshihide Ibata directed it.

Fruits Basket had 2 anime adaptations. Studio Deen animated the first one in 2001 under director Akitaro Daichi, and it had a total of 26 episodes. However, it didn’t adapt the full story of the manga series. The second adaptation aired from 2019 to 2021 and had a total of 63 episodes (3 seasons). TMS Entertainment and director Ibata are also the ones who worked on the recent adaptation.
The series is based on Natsuki Takaya’s Fruits Basket manga series. Hakusensha serialized the series from 1998 to 2006, and it has a total of 23 volumes. The same publisher also published a manga sequel with the title Fruits Basket Another, and a side story titled Fruits Basket: The Three Musketeers Arc.
