The upcoming Cyberpunk: EDGERUNNERS anime revealed the first trailer, key visual and September 2022 premiere date. The series, which is a Netflix original, is a collaboration by video game developer CD Projekt Red and animation studio Trigger. The story shares the universe with Cyberpunk 2077 game series.
The announcement was made on the third day of the Netflix Geeked Week 2022. An inside look into the anime series’ production was also released and it includes concept art and video stills. According to Bartosz Sztybor, one of the writers and producers of the series, they wanted to retain the realistic storyline of the game with ‘bombastic’ visuals to elevate the series.
Meanwhile, showrunner and executive producer Rafal Jaki commented that while the video game is all about immersion, they want the anime series to explore topics that were not possible in the game. This includes the storyline for Edgerunner, who they describe as a pirate within Night City, who wants to fight with the city’s system.
The project was first announced by Studio Trigger in 2020. The staff includes:
- Hiroyuki Imaishi as director
- Masahiko Otsuka as assistant director
- Hiromi Wakabayashi as creative director
- Yoh Yoshinari for character design
- Yuto Kaneko for character design
- Yoshiki Usa for adapted screenplay
- Masahiko Otsuka for adapted screenplay
- Akira Yamaoka for original OST
The official website describes the series’ plot as follows:
CYBERPUNK: EDGERUNNERS tells a standalone, 10-episode story about a street kid trying to survive in a technology and body modification-obsessed city of the future. Having everything to lose, he chooses to stay alive by becoming an edgerunner—a mercenary outlaw also known as a cyberpunk.
