Crunchyroll is once again bringing manga to the masses, as it has announced another go at a manga app. The popular streaming platform announced the launch of the new manga app, Crunchyroll Manga, during Sony’s Consumer Electronics Show press conference on Monday, January 6, 2025. The app will launch as a premium add-on to subscriptions later this year.
Crunchyroll Manga — What We Know So Far
The app will launch in the United States and Canada. While users will only have access to English titles at the app’s debut, the company revealed plans to release titles in other languages, and it is also working on web browser integration. No additional information, such as specific titles or whether the added titles will be simulpubbed, has been announced.
The Crunchyroll Manga endeavor will be the second time Crunchyroll has tried to offer manga as part of its services. Its original manga service was free with a subscription and ran for a decade between October 2013 and December 2023. The original service simultaneously published several Kodansha USA titles for subscribers from 170 countries and territories. While the service started having major issues in 2018, its death knell came in January 2023 when Kodansha removed various titles. Later that year, Crunchyroll announced to its users, “Digital manga will no longer be available on Crunchyroll,” effectively closing the service on December 13.
What’s Crunchyroll?
Now owned by Sony, Crunchyroll is an anime streaming site that a group of graduates from the University of Berkeley started in 2006 as a pirate anime site. The illegal anime site transitioned to a legitimate business and became a subsidiary of AT&T/WarnerMedia’s Otter Media before getting acquired by Sony’s Funimation. Now the world’s largest anime streaming service, Crunchyroll is available in over 200 countries and territories. The company is based in San Francisco, California, and operates a Japanese branch in Shibuya, Tokyo.
