KADOKAWA has confirmed that Cyberpunk: Edgerunners MADNESS Volume 1, the official prequel to the acclaimed anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, will be released in Japan on August 28, 2025. The print edition, based on the ongoing serialization on Comic Alive +, will include a range of exclusive bonuses.
The volume will feature original illustrations and comics by the author, Asano, along with a “Pilgrimage Map” highlighting notable locations from Night City, the setting of the Cyberpunk universe. The wraparound book band (obi) will also include commentary from writer Mafia Kajita and Tomoyo Kurosawa, the voice actress behind Rebecca.
The prequel focuses on the siblings Rebecca and Pilar, characters who gained popularity following the anime’s release in 2022. Written by Bartosz Sztybor, who previously worked on the anime’s screenplay and will return as showrunner and writer for the upcoming Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, the comic goes into the siblings’ backstory before they encounter David Martinez and the rest of the crew.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners MADNESS Volume 1 International Release
The series will be translated into nine languages, with release dates varying by region. The English-language edition, published by Dark Horse Comics, is scheduled for February 24, 2026. Other confirmed releases include Korean (September 2025), Polish (October 2025), and various European languages in late 2025.
Background
The Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime, produced by CD PROJEKT RED and Studio TRIGGER, became a global hit and was voted as the Best New Anime of the Year in 2022. With over 30 million copies of Cyberpunk 2077 sold worldwide, the franchise is now expanding with the upcoming Edgerunners 2 sequel and now the MADNESS prequel comic.
