DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation unveiled several new animated projects during their first-ever joint presentation at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, including the studio’s first anime series, Joker: Laugh Riot, a new adaptation of Absolute Batman, and a Krypto animated series.
Leading the announcements was Joker: Laugh Riot, which marks DC Studios’ first anime production. The series is being developed in collaboration with Japanese production company Sola Entertainment and directed by Yasuhiro Aoki (ChaO, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim).
The story follows the Joker after Batman is mysteriously killed, sending Gotham’s Clown Prince of Crime on a violent search for his greatest rival’s murderer. As his pursuit gradually blurs the line between villain and vigilante, Joker is forced to confront who he is without Batman.
Warner Bros. Animation also announced an adult animated adaptation of Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta’s bestselling Absolute Batman comic. Snyder will serve as showrunner and executive producer, while Dragotta joins the project as a producer. The comic has sold more than six million copies since launching and was among DC’s top-selling titles throughout 2025.
Rounding out the new announcements was Krypto, a family-oriented animated series created by Chowder and Jellystone! creator C.H. Greenblatt. The series follows Superman’s dog as he befriends a group of aspiring neighborhood criminals, with his chaotic but kind-hearted personality gradually changing their lives.
The announcements were made during DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation’s Annecy showcase.
