Disney+ Japan’s hit live-action adaptation of the horror manga Gannibal is getting a season 2 according to a special video shared by the platform’s official YouTube channel.
Considered Disney+’s first Japanese horror-thriller series, the first season of Gannibal took viewers by storm when it launched in December 2022. It stars renowned actor Yuya Yagira, who was nominated for Best Actor for the up-and-coming Asia Contents Awards & Global OTT Awards at the Busan International Film Festival. In addition to Yagira, who plays the main protagonist Daigo Agawa, are also other big names from Japan. Namely, these include Show Kasamatsu, who plays Goto family head Keisuke Goto, and Riho Yoshioka, who plays Agawa’s tough and supportive wife, Yuki Agawa.
Based on the popular manga by Masaaki Ninomiya, the live adaptation revolves around police officer Daigo Agawa and is set in a fictional Japanese village. Known for violence as an enforcer of law in Tokyo, Daigo’s supposed more peaceful life in the countryside did not turn out as expected following subsequent encounters with the Goto family.
Filled with mystery and suspense at every corner, Agawa’s life is turned upside-down upon realizing the brooding mystery that lies in the village and the aforementioned household of the place.
Season 2 will see the return of Shinzo Katayama as the director and will be written by the Oscar-nominated screenwriter Takamasa Oe, known for penning Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s Drive My Car. Teruhisa Yamamoto, also an Oscar winner for Drive My Car, will be producing the show.
The first season of Gannibal took the audience on a roller coaster ride, but only to end on a cliffhanger. But Gannibal Season Two has the making of being more exciting and thrilling than the previous one. Per Disney, the upcoming season will allow the audiences “to uncover more of the village’s horrifying secrets and discover if Daigo has what it takes to escape the impossible and bring the nefarious Goto family to justice”.
