James Carter Cathcart, Beloved Voice Actor of Pokémon’s Professor Oak, Gary, Meowth & James, Dies at 71

James Carter Cathcart, a voice acting veteran, well known for his roles as Pokémon‘s Professor Oak, Meowth, James, and Gary, has passed away at 71 due to throat cancer. Erica Schroeder, who voiced alongside him in Pokémon, confirmed the news via Instagram on July 10:

Rest in peace dear sweet man. 💔 I will miss you. The community will miss you. The world will miss you. One of the most joyful, exuberant, kind-hearted and talented souls no longer walks with us. James Carter Cathcart you were one of a kind, a gentle, beautiful, playful genius and I was happy to call you my friend.
Master of the pen, piano and microphone. Friend to many. Loving father and husband. Thank you for your gifts.

In addition to roles in the first 25 seasons of Pokémon, Cathcart played Weevil Underwood in Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters, and is credited in roles in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Mission Odyssey, Slayers, Ping-Pong Club, and numerous others. James is survived by his children and wife, Martha.
