Kagurabachi by Takeru Hokazono has won the Next Manga Award 2024 in the Print Category, further proving to be one of the titles to keep an eye on as a future shonen hit. The manga began in September 2023 with a strong debut chapter, and has published 3 volumes as of July. The author celebrated winning the award with a special illustration, which features the protagonist Chihiro Rokuhira.
He also left the following comment:
“I truly feel that many people have read my work and found it ‘interesting,’ which makes me really happy and fills me with so much energy to keep drawing manga. I am deeply grateful! I’m also feeling incredibly motivated to make it even more exciting so I can live up to the expectations of everyone who said, ‘You’re next!’ So please continue to support me in the future as well!”
Kagurabachi was followed by Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun: If Episode of Mafia in 2nd place and Tsumiki Ogami & the Strange Everyday Life. in 3rd.
Kagurabachi is serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump. VIZ Media licensed it in English, describing the story:
As a young boy, Chihiro trains every day under his father to become a swordsmith. Although different in temperament, the two spend peaceful days laughing and working together. But one day, tragedy strikes… Now Chihiro burns with hatred and sets out to exact revenge. Following clues left behind by a ruthless yakuza organization, Chihiro confronts the Hishaku, a deadly group of sorcerers that may be behind his father’s murder!
The Next Manga Award was established in 2014 by Kadokawa Corporation’s Da Vinci magazine and Niconico. Its purpose is to discover and introduce works predicted to become popular in the future. Previous winners in the Print Category include multiple works that ended up as hits with anime adaptations, such as My Hero Academia (2015), Kaguya-sama: Love Is War (2017), The Apothecary Diaries (2019), Undead Unluck (2020), and OSHI NO KO (2021).
The other category is Web Manga, which was won this year by Girl Meets Rock! by Kuwahali.
