Most-Streamed Shows in Japan - February 2022

Japanese animation is becoming increasingly popular worldwide, so it’s often interesting to see how the tastes of Japanese fans differ from those from all over the world. Shows that are a hit in Japan may not be so popular in the west and vice-versa. The Gem Ranking Club answers the question of what series are most-streamed in Japan with its rankings based on the data provided by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications. The data is gathered from a survey which is gender-weighted and can be taken on Ministry’s official website. It’s not surprising that anime, in particular, has always dominated these rankings, and this month makes no exception. So without further ado, let’s take a look at the most-streamed shows in Japan for February 2022!

Data is collected from the following streaming websites: ABEMA Premium, Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+, dTV, Docomo Anime Store, FOD, Hulu, J: COM On Demand, Netflix, Paravi, Rakuten TV, SPOOX, TELASA, TSUTAYA. TV, U-NEXT, Animehodai, Disney Plus, Bandai Channel, and Hikari TV Video Service.

As you can see from this chart, Demon Slayer takes the top following the impressive finale of the Entertainment District Arc which was released on Valentine’s Day. Its popularity ceases to dwindle in Japan, winning first place for the 5th month in a row. It’s also the most-watched show of every streaming platform it’s on. Other than Demon Slayer, Winter 2022 anime continues to dominate the rankings this month, with Attack on Titan standing in second and Ranking of Kings in third.

Most Streamed Shows in Japan – February 2022

It’s interesting to note that My Dress-Up Darling just hit the top 20 for the first time in Japan, despite its high popularity in the West and it rarely leaving the top 5 in our weekly charts. Meanwhile, Ranking of Kings at 3rd seems to receive a lot more love in its origin country, as its first and second cour rarely hit top 5 in our weekly rankings and it was voted #8 overall out of only 40 Fall 2021 anime. Police in a Pod is similar, placing 17th in overall Japanese streams, but has yet to rank above #22 in our weekly rankings out of only 35 Winter 2022 anime.

The Promised Neverland Season 2 is another notable surprise. It’s the 15th most-streamed show of the month in Japan out of thousands of shows but carried the same rank out of only 51 anime in Winter 2021. Lastly, Heike Story at #16 is the biggest shock, as it never climbed above #31 out of only 40 Fall 2021 anime in both our weekly and seasonal charts.
