“I am so happy to be able to portray the world of Osamu Tezuka’s Phoenix: Eden17, which I have loved since I was a child, with my own music. I am truly delighted. When I saw the script and the animation, I imagined the sound at once. During the production process, the world that came to mind was one that I had never encountered before and so large in scale that I wondered if I would be able to meet my deadline. Before I knew it, it had become a race against time. The soundscape of Phoenix: Eden17 is centered around a dynamic and mysterious orchestra. I hope you enjoy it.”
Statement from Takatsugu Muramatsu
The anime is based on Osamu Tezuka’s unfinished manga series Phoenix. The series has a total of 12 volumes and each one tells a separate story set in a different era. It was originally serialized from 1954 to 1988 in multiple magazines. The story was never finished as Osamu Tezuka died in 1989 due to stomach cancer. He is a well-known author, known for many works, including Astro Boy, Dororo, Black Jack, and more. He played a key role in popularizing manga and is often referred to as “the godfather of manga.”
Viz Media published all the volumes in English. The licensor describes the plot as:
With grand historical sweep, this self-contained opening volume of Osamu Tezuka’s acclaimed Phoenix saga is an epic account of the human spirit in a time of chaos and warfare, where would-be warrior Nagi and his crew struggle against the elements, invaders, and history itself.
