The novel adaptation of the upcoming anime film Suzume no Tojimari by Makoto Shinkai has released a preview of its cover illustration. First announced in May this year, the novel will be released by Kadokawa Bunko on August 24.
Shinkai, who also directed the Suzume no Tojimari movie, commented on the novel on Twitter. He said that this is his third novel and that he didn’t think he would be able to finish it. At the time, he was working on completing the movie and was “almost crying” because of how difficult it was. Shinkai states that although it was the most difficult thing he has ever done, it was also the most joyful. He hopes everyone will be able to enjoy the story since it is on a completely different level from the movie.
Suzume no Tojimari was first announced in December 2021, and a visual was released in April this year. A trailer featuring the main heroine Suzume Iwato was released in July. Japanese actress Nanoka Hara will be voicing the main character and she was selected from a pool of over 1,700 auditionees.
Shinkai is also writing the screenplay, while Masayoshi Tanaka is doing character designs, and Takumi Tanji is the art director. Comix Wave Films is animating the film. This is the latest of Shinkai’s original film works. His last two movies were Weathering With You and Your Name.
The official website for the movie describes the plot of Suzume no Tojimari as:
Doors of Disaster open across Japan, bringing misfortune. 17-year-old Suzume lives in a quiet town in the Kyushu region in Japan. The story begins when she meets a young man on a journey to discover all the doors. She follows him and finds an old door at an abandoned building in the mountains. As if drawn by something, she reaches out… This is the start of her journey across Japan to lock up the doors that bring disasters. Makoto Shinkai’s modern adventure and story about a girl’s freedom and growth sets off.
