The anime is based on the light novel series by Ayano Takeda. The manga adaptation was serialized on the Kono Manga ga Sugoi! Web magazine. The TV anime series has two seasons, both of which were animated by Kyoto Animation. They aired from April to July 2015 and October to December 2016, respectively. The franchise also has two animated films – Liz and the Blue Bird and Sound! Euphonium: The Movie – Our Promise: A Brand New Day from 2018 and 2019, respectively. Both were animated by Kyoto Animation. Liz and the Blue Bird serves as a spin-off to the second season of the TV anime. A 3rd TV anime season is also in production and set to release in 2024.
Yen Press licensed Sound! Euphonium’s novels in English and describes it as follows:
Finding herself, one note at a time…After a terrible disappointment at the All-Kyoto Concert Band Competition, music has lost its spark for Kumiko. But her first year at Kitauji High School is a chance for a fresh start. So when it comes time to choose a club, she can’t resist joining the band again–even though they’re simply terrible. The strict new club director has promised to whip them into shape to reach Nationals, but the trouble runs deeper than just a lack of practice. Plus, the discord within the club tugs at Kumiko’s old insecurities. Will Kitauji High School find its rhythm before the competition? Will Kumiko?
