The Darwin Incident (Darwin Jihen) is officially getting a TV anime adaptation, though no production details have been released. TOHO Animation previously teased the project, with the announcement coming at midnight on May 22 JST. The information came with a teaser visual, which you can see below.
The Darwin Incident is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Shun Umezawa. It has been serialized in Kodansha’s seinen manga magazine Monthly Afternoon since June 2020. The series won the 15th Manga Taisho in 2022, as well as the Excellence Award at the 25th Japan Media Arts Festival. Kodansha describes the story:
Created in a biological science lab, Charlie is a half human, half chimpanzee hybrid known as a “Humanzee.” Raised by his adoptive human parents, Charlie is now 15 and starting high school. There he meets Lucy, a clever loner who becomes his first-ever friend. But his “normal” life is shattered when the animal rights extremists who freed his mother from the lab fifteen years ago reemerge as terrorists bent on kidnapping Charlie at all costs.
The manga creator Shun Umezawa also drew a special illustration for The Darwin Incident anime announcement, adding the message “Both the production team and voice actors are 100% serious. As the original author, I guarantee this. I think it will be an amazing anime.”
