Originally released for the Nintendo 64 in Japan in November 1998 before launching internationally later that year, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is widely regarded as one of the most influential video games ever made. Developed by Nintendo EAD and directed by Eiji Aonuma and Yoshiaki Koizumi under producer Shigeru Miyamoto, the game introduced many mechanics that later became standards for 3D action-adventure titles, including lock-on targeting, context-sensitive actions, and cinematic storytelling in a 3D environment.
The game follows Link as he travels between childhood and adulthood in an effort to stop Ganondorf from obtaining the Triforce and plunging Hyrule into darkness. Following its release, Ocarina of Time received widespread critical acclaim for its world design, gameplay systems, music, and technical achievements, earning numerous awards and often appearing in lists of the greatest video games ever made.
The game has since sold more than 14 million copies, including its Nintendo 64 original version and the enhanced Nintendo 3DS remake released in 2011. Its influence can still be seen throughout the Zelda franchise, with The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom being the direct sequel that released in 2023.
