As we get closer to the Spring 2022 anime season, one interesting new show is Tomodachi Game – a psychological thriller anime which is set to premiere in April this year. Studio Okuruto Noboru is in charge of the production, with Hirofumi Ogura as director. It’s a story of a high school student who gets involved in a mysterious Tomodachi Game (Friends Game) to pay off a debt together with 4 of his friends. The visual for the upcoming anime adaptation:

Mikoto Yamaguchi conceptualized the manga, while Yuki Sato writes and illustrates it. It runs in Kodansha’s Bessatsu Shonen Magazine since December 2013. It went on hiatus in December 2019, returned for a chapter in February 2020, and went on hiatus again. The manga inspired two live-action films and a live-action series, all of which aired in 2017. When their class’s school trip funds are stolen, five of them are dragged into a mysterious ‘friendship game’ as a result of someone’s debt. They don’t know who entered them into the game or why, and their friendship is put to the test in a series of games. The main character Yuuichi Katagiri has to use his intellect and show no mercy in order to clear the challenges, with each of the friends having their own doubts and motivation.
The psychological thriller has fans comparing it to the likes of Squid Game, and Tomodachi Game is definitely an anime to keep an eye out for in case you enjoy the high-stakes games stories.
