The Art of Rumiko Takahashi: Colors 1978-2024 art collection book is officially getting an English release by VIZ Media, with Fall 2025 as the release date. Rumiko is an iconic manga creator, known for numerous big hit manga series, including Maison Ikkoku, URUSEI YATSURA, Ranma 1/2, and Inuyasha.
She is currently working on MAO, a manga she began in May 2019. It’s serialized in Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday, with 22 volumes released as of November 2024. Volume 23 is scheduled to release on February 18, 2025.
Rumiko Takahashi, today one of Japan’s most celebrated manga artists, began her career in 1978 with URUSEI YATSURA, the comedy sci-fi series featuring the alien Lum and human Ataru. The series quickly became popular for its uncommon humor and storytelling at the time. The series got two anime adaptations; the first by Studio DEEN and Pierrot running for 195 episodes from October 1981 to March 1986, and the second being the recent 2022 reboot by David Production.
In 1987, Takahashi released Maison Ikkoku, a romantic comedy-drama set in a boarding house. Around the same time, she began Ranma ½ (1987–1996), an action-comedy about a gender-bending martial artist. Interestingly, it also got a remake last year, with studio MAPPA animating. The original anime by Studio DEEN ran for 161 episodes from 1989 to 1992
In the 1990s, she introduced Inuyasha (1996–2008), a historical fantasy about a modern girl transported to the Sengoku era. It later got a spin-off anime focused on the protagonists’ children, Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon.
In 2019, she started MAO, which is another supernatural-themed story.
