Goblin Slayer is back with a new season, a new studio, and some new faces. It’s been a while since we last saw the crew, since 2020 to be precise. Keep in mind that Goblin Slayer: Goblin’s Crown movie comes before the second season and that you should watch it if you want to be up to date. This episode was nothing special, but it managed to deliver an old and familiar feeling, thanks to the series’ loveable character dynamic.
As someone who forgot about the movie, I attributed my lack of memory of Noble Fencer to simply being forgetful. However, she’s not too vital for the first episode’s story and you can go ahead and watch it even if you’re yet to catch up. Goblin Slayer Season 2 premiere starts with a rather graphic flashback of the Priestess’ first party. The episode also introduces Wizard Boy – a young adventurer who ends up under Goblin Slayer and Priestess’ wing.
There isn’t much to say about this premiere – it was nice, cozy, and felt somehow familiar. The characters are one of the strong points of Goblin Slayer in general, even though they don’t have names they each have a unique trait and a sense of familiar warmth that brings the viewer back in. I didn’t realize I had such good memories of this show – it’s been almost five years since I last watched it. I don’t remember it having much besides the graphic rape scenes and wisely placed fan service (which you also get a sneak peek of in the second season’s premiere).
It’s oddly entertaining to watch Goblin Slayer miss every attempt at humor or cruelty. He’s the same old, but his companions are forever supportive. That includes the Priestess who is seemingly finally getting an arc dedicated to her personal growth, not just as a support (in every sense) but as an individual.
Overall, I’m not expecting much from Goblin Slayer Season 2 but all things considered, this was a solid premiere. We’ll see where the season goes (it’s listed with 12 episodes) but for now, it can stay a guilty little pleasure. And now, I am off to catch up on the Goblin’s Crown.
Goblin Slayer Season 2 is streaming on Crunchyroll.
