Dragon Ball Super will return for a special one-shot centered on Trunks on February 20, 2025, as shared in the Dragon Ball website’s latest installment of the Toyotarou Tried To Draw series. The announcement reads, “V Jump’s super-sized April edition, which goes on sale on February 20th, features a special one-shot revival of the Dragon Ball Super manga! The reason Trunks, who is fighting for justice as one of the Saiyaman X team, decided to become a hero will be revealed! Look forward to the release!

Toyotarou Tried To Draw sees Dragon Ball Super co-creator Toyotarou draw sketches inspired by Akira Toriyama’s art, featuring not just Dragon Ball, but his other works like Nekomajin, Dr. Slump, Dub & Peter 1, Chokin Senshi Cashman, and even the Dragon Quest game, in which Toriyama was responsible for the character design. Dragon Ball‘s Captain Chicken was the focus of January’s edition. You can check out Toyotarou’s drawing below.

Per the Dragon Ball website, Captain Chicken appeared “in the 28th Tenkaichi Budokai, held ten years after the defeat of Majin Buu. He was slated to face off against Killerno in the third match, but since the battles that take place after Goku versus Uub in the second match are never shown, his true strength remains unknown—perhaps he’s actually a powerhouse?

Toyotarou’s caption read, “A fighter who took part in the 28th Tenkaichi Budokai! In the anime, he calls himself a hero, so maybe he’s involved in the same kind of superhero stuff as the Saiyamen!

At least one of the Saiyamen, Trunks, will feature in Dragon Ball Super‘s return with the new one-shot. The series has been on hiatus since Chapter 103 in March 2024 following Toriyama’s passing. That month, Toyotarou shared Toriyama’s final correction of the Super manga, finding deep meaning in his addition of a scene where Piccolo turns back one last time to say goodbye to Pan’s kindergarten teacher.

So I did not draw Piccolo with that intention,” Toyotarou said on X (formerly Twitter). “But I can’t help but want to add another meaning to it. Mr. Toriyama, thank you very much for your hard work. It was a miracle that I was able to work with you for 9 years. Thank you very much. I pray for your soul to rest in peace.

There’s no official date for Dragon Ball Super‘s return to regular serialization. Nevertheless, following the results of the “Goku’s Best Bout Poll” last August, Toyotarou thanked fans for voting for the Moro fight depicted in Super, saying, “With the Moro fight being included and all, I was delighted to see the poll results. But I won’t stop there! I plan to keep coming up with lots of exciting battles for fans to enjoy, so I hope you all will continue following my work!” (13:38)

You can read Dragon Ball Super on Manga PLUS and VIZ’s Shonen Jump app. The former describes the series: “Having defeated Boo, Goku is starting to get bored with his life on Earth. His wife, Chi-chi, wants him to get a job, but all he wants to do is train and fight stronger enemies. Elsewhere in the universe, the God of Destruction, Beerus, and his attendant Whis are traveling from planet to planet in search of food and entertainment. After blowing up some hapless victims, Beerus is reminded of a man from his dreams with the moniker “Super Saiyan God,” or something like that… The God of Destruction sets his sights on Earth to track down this mysterious man! Maybe this will give Goku something to do?”
