Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? (commonly known as Danmachi or Familia Myth) has broken the record for consecutive monthly publications for a single light novel series, according to the author Fujino Omori, with 13 books now published in a row. The previous record was thought to be held by Nisio Isin’s Katanagatari series, which was published every month from January to December 2007. Nisio Isin is also known for the Monogatari series and its sequels, as well as the Cipher Academy.
Starting from the release of Astrea Record, Vol. 1 Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Tales of Heroes on October 24, 2022, Omori has published a new novel for 13 consecutive months, with the latest and 13th book in a row, Familia Myth: Episode Ryu 2, released on October 14, 2023. In a rather ironic statement via X, given that Danmachi‘s leveling-up system brings humans closer to Gods, Omori says:
“Thanks to all of you, we were able to publish consecutively for 13 months. I think I heard that the record for consecutive monthly publications for a single light novel series was 12 months, so I tried challenging it, but I was completely lost by the end! To all the related staff and readers, thank you so very much!!! #DanMachi10thAnniversary #DanMachi #danmachi
Kazuma Kamachi-sensei and Nisio Isin-sensei are truly too incredible! Humans cannot become gods!!! (I won’t do it anymore!!!)“
The X account for the Danmachi anime congratulated Omori: “Danmachi series published for 13 consecutive months! Thank you to all our readers! Thank you for your continued support 🙇♂️“
While Omori holds the record for consecutive light novels published in a single series, Kazuma Kamachi (A Certain Magical Index series) surpasses this with 28 consecutive months of publication across multiple, spanning from September 2014 with The Unexplored Summon://Blood-Sign volume 1 to December 2016 with The Unexplored Summon://Blood-Sign volume 6. During this time, Kamachi released 6 books for The Unexplored Summon://Blood-Sign, 7 for A Certain Magical Index: New Testament, 3 for Saikyou wo Kojiraseta Level Counter Stop Kenseijo Beatrice no Jakuten Sono Na wa “Buu Buu”, 5 for Heavy Object, 4 for Intelli Village no Zashiki Warashi, and two 10th anniversary novels.
Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? has been ongoing in SB Creative’s GA Bunko since January 2013. Omori’s 13-month continuous publication forms one out of the 10 projects planned for the series’ 10-year anniversary celebrations. The final project will be a bonfire festival where the anime cast and author will be in attendance. Congratulating Omori, several prominent authors sent messages of encouragement:
Reki Kawahara (Sword Art Online author): “Congratulations on the 10th anniversary of DanMachi! As fellow authors who serialized on the same forum, let’s keep working hard from here on too!“
Koushi Tachibana (Date A Live author): “Congratulations on the 10th anniversary of ‘Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon’! 10 years! It’s an unfathomably long time! However, for ‘DanMachi’, this is still only the middle layer! May the goddess’s blessings be with you on your continuing long journey!“
Gakuto Mikumo (Strike the Blood author): “Congratulations on ‘DanMachi’s 10th anniversary! I truly love the gods and children that Omori-sensei depicts! I’m looking forward to their future adventures!“
Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? has published 19 volumes that have been adapted across 5 anime seasons. The spin-off light novel series Sword Oratoria has 14 volumes released while Familia Chronicle has 3 volumes, including the latest Episode Lyu 2. Sword Oratoria also received an anime series. Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? has received multiple manga adaptations, a movie, and two mobile games.
Yen Press licensed the series in English: volume 18 is set to release December 18, 2023, and the publisher describes it as:
The white fairy swears to serve the goddess. The black fairy inscribes the mood of the times. The prum weeps as four regrets become power. The chariot advances to cut down all but the goddess. And the monarch demands a show of power that is neither dream nor sophistry. From this point on, the boy will have to write his own legends.
