A new week, a new episode—another point to contemplate. In Delicious in Dungeon episode 8, we get a most insightful question: “Is this a slice of life? Or is it just fantasy?” With half of its episode dedicated to Marcille reminiscing over the now partly digested Falin, we got an enjoyable insight into the early days of our beloved elf.
Onward to Dungeons
Most people glamorize some part of their education. Be it because that was the time they were most popular, had more friends, or just felt more excited about what was to come and what was happening. Marcille is one of those people. Demonstrating the cognitive ability of a goldfish, Marcille awakes in a panic over the fact that she forgot to cast healing magic on Laios. But as Marcille realizes he’s just asleep, she lauds the dungeon and how well everything works together. In the rose-colored flashback we’re treated to, Marcille reminisces about being the “most brilliant female student in the school’s history.” Based on all we’ve seen, that seems like a statement that could be contested. In her recollection, however, the teachers used to love her, students fawned over her, and history was written about her. But when it came time to show her dazzle, she fell well short of Falin.
In what’s basically Delicious in Dungeon’s version of “What kid can keep the class pet the happiest,” students are asked to trap spirits in jars and fill them with just the right amount of magic. At the end of the experiment, hold a flame over the jar. If there’s no flame, too bad they died. If there’s a weak flame, they’re nearing their expiration date. If the flame is healthy, they’re alive and well. Initially, Marcille expects Falin to fail as her spirit jar leaves much to be desired. But this is an excellent example of how knowledge works, you make assumptions based on what you know. If something completely unknown is introduced into the equation, it will negate your current understanding of it. So, when Falin places a candle over her jar, causing a gigantic flame to erupt, it shows Marcille that there may be more to things than she understands, and it also shows Goblin Slayer-san another way to gawblinate some goblins. In her quest to further understand magic and dungeons, Marcille asks Falin how she managed to do what she did. Falin basically says, “Got it from a dungeon, you noob.” Falin then takes Marcille to said dungeon to show her the process. Along the way, she lets her know about the ecology of the dungeon and how important even the most benign monsters are. And so a friendship was born.
Water Levels: They Suck
As Delicious in Dungeon episode 8 progresses, the group decides that Laios is doing well enough to move out. They decide that they’ll only camp out twice more before finally facing down the Red Dragon and saving Falin. But before they move out, Marcille decides she needs a scrub down. When doing so, she inadvertently heats up too much water. And because of that little misstep, she’s attacked by an Undine when she disposes of it. So far, we’ve seen quite a few monsters, and as far as lethality goes, Undines seems one of the most problematic. Because Marcille is the only one capable of walking on water (hooray for magic), no one else in the party can assist her. One would think an adventuring party would have a rope or something to throw in a situation like this, but one never really acts the way they think they’d act.
Unfortunately for Marcille, she doesn’t fare well and takes a leg and shoulder shot. Most wouldn’t think it, but compressed water, especially at high velocity, will cause plenty of damage. Cornered, she realizes that the fight will not end in her favor unless she takes drastic measures and decides to explode the water beneath her as the Undine attacks. Thus, becoming the third cute waifu this week to Allah Akbhar themselves. And because of that, she’s saved. Magia Baiser would be so proud. But even though she’s safe, she’s not saved. While she managed to stop her bleeding, she’s low on mana, exhausted, and anemic. And seeing as how they have to fight a dragon in a few days, that doesn’t bode well for the party. They contemplate getting help on other adventures, but there’s little hope in that department. So they opt for the only thing they can: some monster chow. In particular, they opt for kelpie liver. While most people revile the taste of liver and offal as a whole, liver is actually pretty good for you when eaten in moderation. And it can provide a short, sharp shock to your system when unwell. While the party feeds the injured Marcille some grilled liver, they indulge in all the other tasty tidbits the Kelpie provided them. This causes Marcille to momentarily jolt back and demand better food, but while her will is strong, her body isn’t. And with that, she slumps back, and Delicious in Dungeon episode 8 draws to a close.
