The conclusion of Dragon Ball Super Chapter 103 announced that the manga will be on hiatus until further notice. V Jump’s editorial staff added that they were saddened by Akira Toriyama’s passing and that they wanted to thank him for his achievements. Toriyama recently received TAAF’s Achievement Award for contributions to animation culture and the industry, with the manga and anime community also paying their respects to him earlier this month.
Dragon Ball Super Chapter 103 felt like the perfect period to pause. The completion of the Super Hero arc saw the remnants of the Red Ribbon Army drive off into the sunset, with future attempts to conquer Earth now rendered futile. Family time between Goku, his granddaughter Pan (whom he forgot), and Piccolo made for good humor. Fans were treated to Vegeta’s enduring bond with Bulma, with the once cold-blooded Prince of All Saiyans worried about her forgetting him. New bonds were also forged between Gohan and Broly, with Goku noting that the Earth was now in safe hands supposing his absence.
Chapter 103 also makes clear that Gohan’s Beast form is a mutation, rather than a variant of Super Saiyan. Beerus’ previous suggestion that Goku becomes a God of Destruction and Gohan breaking through Ultra Instinct leaves the story open-ended enough for the Toyotarou and the V Jump staff to resume the series following the hiatus one day.
Dragon Ball Super was written by Toriyama, with illustrations by Toyotarou. The series has been published in Shueisha’s V Jump since June 2015, with Toei Animation adapting the series into an anime spanning 131 episodes. VIZ licenses the manga, describing the first volume:
Having defeated Boo, Goku is starting to get bored with his life on Earth. His wife, Chi-chi, wants him to get a job, but all he wants to do is train and fight stronger enemies. Elsewhere in the universe, the God of Destruction, Beerus, and his attendant Whis are traveling from planet to planet in search of food and entertainment. After blowing up some hapless victims, Beerus is reminded of a man from his dreams with the moniker “Super Saiyan God,” or something like that… The God of Destruction sets his sights on Earth to track down this mysterious man! Maybe this will give Goku something to do?
The length of the Dragon Ball Super manga’s hiatus is yet to be confirmed.
