Satoru Noda wrote and illustrated to Golden Kamuy manga. It was serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Young Jump from August 2014 to April 2022, getting a total of 31 compilation volumes. It is one of the highest selling series, with over 29 million circulating copies as of July 2024. The manga also won the Manga Taisho award in 2016 (awarded annually to a manga with 8 or less volumes), while Noda won the grand prize for the manga at the 22nd Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in 2018. Viz Media licensed the manga in English, describing the story:
In the early twentieth century, Russo-Japanese War veteran Saichi “Immortal” Sugimoto scratches out a meager existence during the postwar gold rush in the wilderness of Hokkaido. When he stumbles across a map to a fortune in hidden Ainu gold, he sets off on a treacherous quest to find it. But Sugimoto is not the only interested party, and everyone who knows about the gold will kill to possess it! Faced with the harsh conditions of the northern wilderness, ruthless criminals and rogue Japanese soldiers, Sugimoto will need all his skills and luck—and the help of an Ainu girl named Asirpa—to survive.
The series also has TV anime adaptation, which first began in April 2018. The first two seasons were animated by Geno Studio, with the second one airing until December of that year. The studio also animated the third season, which aired from October to December 2020. Studio Brain’s Base then took over for Season 4, which was released between October 2022 and June 2023 (including a delay due to a staff member’s passing).
The fifth and final season was announced immediately after the finale of Season 4.
