Nintendo has officially announced a new LEGO set based on the Great Deku Tree from The Legend of Zelda. It’s a 2-in-1 set, which allows for it to be built as either the Great Deku Tree from Ocarina of Time or from Breath of the Wild. The set opened for pre-orders today priced at $299, and it will be available for purchase starting on September 1, 2024.
The 2,500-piece also features some iconic sceneries from the video games, such as the Master Sword pedestal from Breath of the Wild and Link’s House from Ocarina of Time. Both builds offer interactive features. In the Breath of the Wild version, the Great Deku Tree’s face can be animated with the simple press of a lever, while the Ocarina of Time version has a mechanism which opens the Great Deku Tree’s mouth, revealing a very easily recognizable Skulltula!
The set also includes four LEGO mini figures. For the Breath of the Wild version, there are Princess Zelda and Link wearing their recognizable blue attires, while you can find both Young Link and Link for the Ocarina of Time version. Additionally, the set includes buildable characters and creatures such as the beloved Navi, Hestu the Korok (complete with his maracas), several smaller Koroks, Deku Babas, the Deku Sprout, and a Skulltula.
Eiji Aonuma, producer of The Legend of Zelda series at Nintendo, said about the launch:
I’m really thrilled that The Legend of Zelda is joining the world of LEGO bricks, which has spurred the creative impulses of so many people of all ages.
The Deku Tree was the first element from The Legend of Zelda we wanted to represent using LEGO bricks. This set allows you to build two different versions of the Deku Tree from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild with unique features that are a great fit for the nature of the series. I can’t wait for everyone to get the chance to build this part of The Legend of Zelda world with their own hands.
LEGO designer Wes Talbott also commented about the creation of the set:
Our fans have been asking for a LEGO set based on The Legend of Zelda series for a while so we were delighted to work with Nintendo to create the Great Deku Tree in brick form. As a fan of the franchise, it was great to work on this set and fill it with details and references from the games. I’m also glad we managed to offer the choice to build one of two versions to appeal to many Zelda fans. I can’t wait to see the fans’ reaction to this set.
The Legend of Zelda is a video game franchise created by Japanese game designers Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka. Most of the games for the franchise were developed and published by Nintendo, with some installments and re-releases being outsourced.
It broke new ground with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which released in 2017 for the Nintendo Switch and Wii U. It introduced open world gameplay to the Legend of Zelda universe and received huge recognition and praise. Breath of the Wild is also the top selling game in the series and one of the best-selling video games of all time, having sold over 28 million copies by 2022. Its sequel, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, sold 10 million units in three days and set a record for the franchise.
A live-action The Legend of Zelda movie is also currently in production.
