The ONE PIECE live-action season 2 is well under production since its September announcement, and a new video is teasing the appearance of Galdino (Mr. 3). Previously, the producers said that the scripts for a second season were already ready and that production could last between 12 to 18 months after the SAG-AFTRA strike ended. In the original announcement, Chopper’s introduction was also teased.
The new video comes on May 5, Luffy’s birthday. Iñaki Godoy brings out a candle-looking cake, with the recognizable 3 on top. The character uses the Doru Doru no Mi (Wax Wax Fruit) devil fruit, and you can see the teaser video below.
The live-action series has Matt Owens (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Luke Cage) and Steven Maeda (The X-Files, CSI: Miami, Lost) serving as writers, executive producers, and showrunners. The creator, Eiichiro Oda, is also among the show’s executive producers. We also got the chance to interview the Director of Photography for the first 2 episodes, Nicole Hirsch Whitaker, and we talked a bit about the production, cast, staff, challenges, fun and more. Check out the full interview for more.
The first season made its debut on August 31, and it topped Netflix’s global English TV Ranking with 18.5 million total views, 140.1 million hours viewed and an average runtime of 7:34 hours. It kept its top spot in the 2nd week as well, marking a huge success for the adaptation.
The ONE PIECE manga is written and drawn by Eiichiro Oda. It currently has 1113 chapters, while the anime adaptation is at 1103 episodes. VIZ Media licensed the manga in English, and Crunchyroll streams the anime. They describe the story:
Monkey. D. Luffy refuses to let anyone or anything stand in the way of his quest to become the king of all pirates. With a course charted for the treacherous waters of the Grand Line and beyond, this is one captain who’ll never give up until he’s claimed the greatest treasure on Earth: the Legendary One Piece!
Besides Mr. 3, the number is also making some fans believe a 3rd season was already green-lit (thinking about the Avatar live-action announcing 2 additional seasons at once). ONE PIECE was definitely a bigger success, though we’ll have to wait for future updates for that one.
