Pokémon LEGENDS Z-A revealed its gameplay mechanics in a new trailer, confirming a simultaneous worldwide release for Fall 2025 (the English release says late 2025). This is the latest entry in the Pokémon series, and it will take place in Lumiose City (Miare City in Japanese), the urban environment first introduced in Pokémon X and Y (2013). The city is undergoing a major redevelopment, aiming to create a space where Pokémon and humans can coexist better.
With a real-time battle system, the return of Mega Evolution, and the introduction of Wild Zones, this game represents an interesting direction for the franchise, blending familiar mechanics with new features.
A Modernized Lumiose City
Set in Lumiose City, the game introduces a revitalized metropolis with updated infrastructure, enhanced green spaces, and a stronger emphasis on Pokémon integration. The city now features:
- More natural landscapes, including parks, waterfronts, and greenery.
- Technological advancements that give Lumiose City a futuristic feel.
- A balance between commercial districts and natural environments.
At the center of the city remains the Prism Tower, Lumiose’s symbol. The story begins with the protagonist arriving as a visitor, checking into Hotel Z, an old building that serves as their home base throughout the adventure.
Introducing Real-Time Battles – A First for Pokémon
Unlike previous Pokémon games, which followed a turn-based battle system, Pokémon LEGENDS Z-A introduces real-time combat, where both trainers and Pokémon can move freely during encounters. Key battle mechanics include:
- Trainers and Pokémon can both move in real time, creating the possibility for new battle strategies.
- Move execution speed and range will play a big role in combat.
- Timing-based mechanics allow players to swap Pokémon and use moves at precise moments for an advantage.
Wild Zones – Pokémon Coexisting in the City
Another important part of Lumiose City’s redevelopment, led by the Quasartico Inc corporation., is the implementation of Wild Zones. These dedicated spaces offer natural habitats for Pokémon, allowing for a more integrated coexistence between Pokémon and humans.
Wild Zone Features:
- Trainers can directly engage with Pokémon, choosing to battle or capture them in real time.
- Pokémon react dynamically, meaning some may flee if they detect the trainer, requiring a stealthier approach.
- Throwing Poké Balls manually allows for a more interactive capturing process.
- Battling and weakening Pokémon first improves the chances of a successful capture.
The Return of Mega Evolution
Mega Evolution, a feature originally introduced in Pokémon X and Y, returns in Pokémon LEGENDS Z-A. This temporary transformation allows certain Pokémon to unlock greater strength and, in some cases, even change their typing.
How Mega Evolution Works:
- Trainers must possess a Keystone, embedded in a Mega Ring or another accessory.
- Pokémon must hold a corresponding Mega Stone to undergo the transformation.
- Other trainers in Lumiose City wear Keystones in various forms, hinting at unique lore surrounding Mega Evolution.
Some Confirmed Mega-Evolved Pokémon:
- Mega Charizard X & Y
- Mega Lucario
- Mega Gardevoir
- Mega Kangaskhan
- Mega Ampharos
- Mega Sableye
- Mega Absol
- Mega Altaria
- Mega Tyranitar
Mega Evolution is expected to play a major role in battles, being described as “will likely be your key to victory in Pokémon battles.”
Starter Pokémon Options
Early in the adventure, players will befriend a Pokémon that becomes their partner, officially beginning their journey as a Pokémon Trainer. The options in Pokémon LEGENDS Z-A are:
- Chikorita (Grass Type) – Uses its leaf to sense environmental changes and enjoys sunbathing.
- Tepig (Fire Type) – A playful yet food-driven Pokémon that can launch fireballs from its nostrils.
- Totodile (Water Type) – A feisty Pokémon that loves to bite anything that moves.
Zygarde Also Appears
The legendary Pokémon Zygarde appears in the game in multiple forms, playing a significant role in the overarching story. Made up of Cells and Cores, Zygarde changes its appearance and strength based on how many components it has gathered.
Zygarde’s Forms:
- Zygarde 10% Forme – Small and agile, running at speeds of over 60 mph.
- Zygarde 50% Forme – A guardian of Pokémon ecosystems, monitoring environmental stability.

Zygarde is closely tied to the game’s central conflict, though its exact role has not been revealed
