Set during the ancient Roman Empire period, Thermae Romae Novae follows the story of bathroom architect Lucius who has trouble coming up with new ideas for public bathroom space in ancient Rome. One day, as he is relaxing in one of the public bathhouses, he is suddenly transported to modern-day Japan, more specifically to an onsen, the Japanese version of a public bathhouse. Here, he discovers common items and facilities inside the onsen which inspires him to adapt to his plans for the public bathhouse back in ancient Rome. The anime is based on a manga by Mari Yamazaki.
