If you are a fan of Lore Olympus and want to dive into the world of the story, food is one of the best ways to do so. The Official Lore Olympus Cookbook allows you to recreate dishes from the Lore Olympus world’s recipes inspired for you to try, and since Greek mythology is at the centre of the story, you would also be exploring traditional Greek cuisine, so this is the real deal!
Why is this important and exciting? Summer is here, and with a lot more time on our hands, either from finishing school or just being more motivated to try new things, it’s the perfect time to start a new hobby. In my opinion, summer feels like an additional motivation to learn and have fun.
For me, this moment is all about growth. I just wrapped my undergrad degree and am still figuring out what to do next/being unemployed, I have been spending time cooking more for my family, but also experimenting with different hobbies. So, when I got the chance to review The Official Lore Olympus Cookbook, it was a sign to develop my cooking skills further, but also to try a different way of cooking.
Feast like the gods with sixty food and drink recipes inspired by the world of Lore Olympus—with a foreword by Rachel Smythe, plus sumptuous illustrations and photographs throughout!
Uncover the culinary secrets of the Lore Olympus pantheon with this official cookbook that breathes fresh life into traditional Greek cuisine. Organized by season, each chapter offers a recipe for any time of day—whether you are hankering for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or a bright pink mocktail! And if you want to party like an Olympian, there are four feasts at the end of each section to serve as inspiration for a themed party.
Book Review:
One of the great aspects of The Official Lore Olympus Cookbook is that it is hardcover. Since there are a lot of pages, it’s nice to have a hardcover binding, particularly from a cooking standpoint, when you are cooking and do not want to discover that you are ripping anything. Personally, I think high-quality hardcover cookbooks make a cookbook feel more credible, and this one certainly represents that very well.
The layout is fun, clean and user friendly, and the recipes are separated by seasons, so the spring recipes have their own look and feel. A lot of cookbooks organize their recipes thematically. I appreciate that this one organizes its recipes by a natural flow that parallels the course of events.
As someone who is very visual, I will point out that not every dish has a picture. If you are also visual, like I am, you are going to need to Google some of the recipes for reference. That said, there are a fair number of pictures, just not all of them. Some of the images even contained two recipes at once (for example, the dish that I featured in my feature image, on the page where there was another dish pictured with it).
The photography looks beautiful, very visually appealing and on-brand for Lore Olympus. Overall, I don’t mind the lack of images for every recipe. Many cookbooks do that in order to conserve space. And sometimes it’s nice to just narrow in on a recipe without tedious details.
Final verdict? The Official Lore Olympus Cookbook is organized, aesthetically pleasing, and easy to use even if it sometimes requires your imagination (or Google) to figure out what a dish should look like!
Food Review:
For my first recipe from The Official Lore Olympus Cookbook, I decided to play it safe and go with a Spanakopita Pasta Bake because honestly, who doesn’t love pasta?! My family does for sure! Before I share my thoughts, I should apologize for the images. I was so hungry I had to take a picture with my phone instead of my camera so the picture is not ideal. I also used a healthier pasta (they allowed any pasta), so mine looks a little different. But the taste? So good.
As a beginner to new recipes, I liked that it was very clear and just a basic outline. There is even estimated cooking time (although I took a little longer since I am still learning!). The directions were easy to follow and turned out to be well worth it.
Greek food is totally new in my family, as we typically stay in the Asian and American category, so this was good fun! And guess what? Everyone enjoyed it! My dad, who normally does not try unexplained tastes, said that the dish was “easy to eat and real good.” My brother agreed and honestly, that is probably the highest praise I could receive. Pasta is pasta, but this dish was totally different. The flavors were fresh and comforting both at the same time. I would definitely make this again.
I was flipping through the cookbook, and I am definitely going to make some Greek desserts next. I’ve never made desserts at home before, so that will be a new life experience entirely. There are so many good-looking options in the book, and I am looking forward to trying more.
Final thoughts? This recipe was successful, even with my substitutions and rookie pacing. If you are a beginner to Greek cooking (or just love pasta), this is a great beginning recipe. I mean, if my family enjoys it, that means it will probably be good for you too!
The cookbook will be available starting on July 1.
