Originally serialized from 1995 to 2002 in Shogakukan’s Shojo Comic, the manga, known in Japan as Sora wa Akai Kawa no Hotori, has surpassed 20 million copies in circulation including digital editions. It won the 46th Shogakukan Manga Award in the shojo category and was later adapted into a Takarazuka Revue stage production in 2018. The series is licensed in English by VIZ Media.

VIZ describes the story:
Yuri, a teen of the 21st century, has been transported to ancient Anatolia as part of a scheme by the evil Nakia, Queen of the Hittites. Only the intervention of Nakia’s stepson, Prince Kail, saved Yuri from the Queen’s bloodthirsty intentions. As an unintended consequence, the people of the kingdoms of Anatolia have embraced Yuri as the incarnation of the great war-goddess Ishtar.
