AHAVERSE has announced Scissor Seven: The Movie, a brand-new animated feature film set in the world of its hit franchise Scissor Seven. The project was unveiled during the company’s New World Premiere showcase at BilibiliWorld 2026 as part of a wave of announcements for the franchise.
Currently in production, the feature film is targeting a global release in 2028. According to AHAVERSE, the story will take place in the mysterious martial arts kingdom of Xuanwu, where Seven becomes caught in a conflict between rival factions that challenges not only his strength but also his beliefs about the meaning of life in a world driven by power, ambition, and reputation.
Official synopsis
The next chapter of Scissor Seven will unfold on the big screen in a new animated feature film currently in production. Set in the mysterious martial arts kingdom of Xuanwu, the film draws Seven into a conflict between rival powers that will test not only his strength, but also forces him to question what truly gives life meaning in a world driven by power, ambition and reputation.
The announcement is part of AHAVERSE’s revealed strategy to grow Scissor Seven beyond its main storyline into what it describes as a larger ecosystem of stories, characters, formats, and experiences. Alongside the film, the company also announced the HEIBAI spin-off animated series set 25 years in the past, an official action-adventure mobile game, the launch of its new AHABOOKS publishing initiative, the Cheap-Life Hua spin-off manhua, and the annual Chicken Island Party live music event.
AHAVERSE founder and Chief IP Officer Aiken Zou said the announcements represent more than a collection of individual projects.
“Today is not about announcing a collection of separate projects. It is about showing how stories can grow into worlds, through new characters, new adventures, and new creative voices. Our goal is to give global audiences more worlds to return to, while creating opportunities for creators to help shape the stories of tomorrow.”
Originally debuting in 2018, Scissor Seven has become one of China’s most internationally recognized animated franchises. The series became the first Chinese original animation to be released as a Netflix Original, streams in more than 190 countries, has attracted over 40 million fans worldwide, and has surpassed 30 billion views across platforms. Beyond the animated series, the franchise has expanded into comics, games, music, merchandise, and live experiences.
Why Xuanwu, why now
We interviewed the AHAVERSE team ahead of the announcement to learn more about the film and the thinking behind it. Asked what drew the studio to Xuanwu as the setting for Seven’s next chapter, the team explained:
“Xuanwu has always been one of the most intriguing parts of the Scissor Seven world. While Chicken Island represents the warmth, humour and found family that audiences have come to love, the mysterious martial arts nation of Xuanwu allows us to explore a much larger world shaped by traditions, political rivalries and centuries of history.
Despite that larger scale, the emotional heart remains the same. Seven’s relationships, humour and humanity continue to anchor the story no matter how high the stakes become.”
On why this story is being told as a feature film rather than another season of the series, AHAVERSE said:
“A feature film allows us to tell a story with different pacing, scale and cinematic ambition that naturally differs from an episodic series.
Audiences can expect larger action sequences, more ambitious world-building and a richer exploration of the world and its rival powers, while still finding the humour and emotional sincerity that define Scissor Seven. Rather than changing who Seven is, the film allows us to place him in circumstances that challenge him in entirely new ways.”
The team also addressed who the film is really for, longtime fans or newcomers discovering the franchise for the first time:
“Definitely both. One of our goals from the very beginning was to make the film work as a complete cinematic experience in its own right, so newcomers can discover Scissor Seven through the movie without feeling they’ve missed essential background from the animated series.
At the same time, longtime fans will find plenty to appreciate. The film takes Seven back to Xuanwu, the martial arts nation where he came from, allowing us to explore more of its culture, history and the forces that shape the wider world.”
