Episode 22 of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End has aired and it was pretty mundane. But it’s not that I’m complaining since a slight lull in the action is expected after the exams will have a short break. While this episode might seem uneventful on the surface, it still carries significant weight by maintaining the series’ trademark focus on character development and subtle parallels between past and present. The episode also explored deeper into the characters introduced in this arc. It was great to see all the examinee groups hanging out together despite them practically trying to murder each other over birds for the past few episodes. Not only that but we are also treated with more Fern and Stark moments.
Seeing Fern acting like a wife to Stark and mother to Frieren is hilarious once again. Fern’s pouts are iconic at this point and we got plenty of those in this episode. Stark and Fern’s petty quarrels were cute as always and once we got into the scene of Frieren treating them to dinner to cheer up Fern, we get another flashback of the hero’s party at the same restaurant.
Himmel’s thoughtful request to preserve his flavor for Frieren’s future visits serves as a touching reminder of his enduring presence in her life. While the flavors of the food changed, what remained unchanged were Frieren’s vivid memories of her time with Himmel and the others. She even remembered Himmel’s favorite dish and recommended it to Stark. It just goes to show how much Frieren valued the time she spent with the hero’s party. She may have plenty of time but those spent with them are the ones she appreciates the most.
Moving over to the side characters, it was somewhat heartwarming seeing everyone interact with each other naturally. For instance, Denken acts like a grandfather to Laufen and spoils her like no tomorrow while Richter’s desire for Denken’s approval adds a familial dynamic to their bond.
On the flip side, Übel and Land find themselves alone together, a situation that hints at her keen interest in him. However, her interest is beyond mere romantic attraction. Übel is more drawn to the secrets and magic that Land harbors. After she reveals her ability to replicate Wirbel’s spells suggests that she possesses a talent for mimicking magic, and she desires to acquire Land’s unique abilities as well. While the limits or rules of her magical replication remain unclear, it adds layers to their characters and the mysteries surrounding them. Land’s cautionary advice to Fern not to reveal her full capabilities to Übel during the first part of the mage exams implies his awareness of Übel’s intentions and abilities. Despite this, Übel seems to not let her sights out of four eyes soon.
Wirbel also stole a bit of a spotlight in this episode by recognizing Stark’s strength and promptly enlisting him for some side quests. This moment not only shows Wirbel’s hard-working nature but also underscores his keen eye for talent. Although it was a bit disappointing not to witness any action scenes featuring them fighting a monster, it was at least nice to see Stark forming bonds with other male characters since Sein’s departure.
Finally, Kanne and Lawine had some adorable moments in this episode. Alongside Frieren and Fern, the four girls enjoyed each other’s company wherein they engaged in girl stuff. However, the highlight of their interaction was when the childhood friends expressed their gratitude to Frieren for carrying them during the exams. This moment helped Frieren realize the rewarding feeling of being remembered and appreciated by those she has helped, even in small ways. It was a touching scene and Himmel’s words ultimately resonated with Frieren, resulting in her smiling so wholesome.
Overall, while episode 22 has been slower-paced (compared to previous episodes), it sets the stage for the upcoming action-packed second part of the mage exams. The new trailer teases even more intense action, possibly surpassing what we’ve seen so far in the series. With only six episodes left before the end of the season, this episode might be the final setup for the epic conclusion that’s about to come.
