The Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End series is getting a prequel novel, which will be released on April 17. The novel is titled Shosetsu Soso no Frieren ~Zenso~ and will be written by Mei Hachimoku, who is known as the author of The Tunnel to Summer, the Exit of Goodbyes light novel series.
According to the listing for the novel on Shogakukan, the prequel novel will be composed of five original short stories revolving around the characters Frieren, Fern, Stark, Kanne/Lawine, and Aura. It is also worth noting that the prequel novel will be released alongside the original manga series’ 13th volume.
The Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End original manga series is written by Kanehito Yamada and illustrated by Tsukasa Abe. It is currently being serialized Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday since April 2020. Viz Media has licensed the manga, with the 10th volume currently out, describing said volume’s plot as:
Years before the end of the war against the Demon King, Macht, the most powerful of the Seven Sages of Destruction, made a deal with the lord of the fortress city of Weise in an attempt to understand human emotions. Although the deal was at first beneficial to both sides, Macht eventually transformed the entire city and all of its residents into gold. Now, the strange tale of Macht, the fate of Weise, and Denken’s own past will all lead Frieren and her companions to one of their most difficult confrontations yet.
An anime adaptation by Madhouse is currently airing, with the 26th episode to be released on March 8. Keiichiro Saito is directing it, while Tomohiro Suzuki is in charge of the script, Evan Call is handling the music, and Reiko Nagasawa is the character designer. Crunchyroll is streaming the series, describing the story as follows:
After the party of heroes defeated the Demon King, they restored peace to the land and returned to lives of solitude.
