The Kaiju No 8 (Monster #8) manga by Naoya Matsumoto is the fastest in Shonen Jump Plus history to have 1 million copies in circulation. The manga was published less than 8 months ago in July 2020, and it has 28 chapters so far. Shueisha released a promotional video to commemorate the milestone:
The manga follows the 32-year old Kafka as he aims to join the Defense Force to fight the Kaiju (monsters). The Kaiju are similar to Curses from Jujutsu Kaisen, though I particularly enjoy the way humor is integrated into this manga.
VIZ Media licenses it in English, and you can also read it for free on the MANGA Plus website or app. They describe the story:
A man working a job far removed from his childhood dreams gets wrapped up in an unexpected situation…! Becoming a monster, he aims once again to fulfill his lifelong dream…!
Besides being the fastest to hit 1 million copies, the Kaiju No 8 manga also has other proof of popularity. It often trends on Twitter and it’s even nominated to win the 2021 Manga Taisho Awards. There are 10 nominees, and two of them are Tetsuya Endou’s Spy x Family and Akasaka Aka & Yokoyari Mengo’s Oshi no Ko. We will know the winner sometime in March.
The first volume of Kaiju No. 8 released on December 4. The 2nd volume was also released yesterday (March 4) in Japan, and you can check that out below:
Kaiju No. 8 is extremely popular, especially for a new series. It’s on a good path to becoming another hit from Shonen Jump, and we all know what that could mean for a manga! For now, you can catch up within a few hours if you are interested (though the last chapter left us at a cliffhanger so maybe wait a week or two at least).
