Toho has announced that it has made a strategic investment in CoMix Wave Films, by buying 45 shares or the equivalent of 6.09% of the company. The announcement comes after yesterday’s acquisition of GKIDS and the acquisition of Science SARU in May this year.
According to a recent disclosure from Toho, the investment will allow the company to contribute improvement of the production environment and expansion of the creative opportunities at CoMix Wave Films. They also aim to further grow their animation business by delivering the animation film studio’s works produced by the studio to the world.
Since the theatrical release of The Garden of Words in 2013, Toho has participated in the production and distribution of several works produced by CoMix Wave Films. Other films that have been distributed by Toho from the studio include Your Name (2016), Weathering With You (2019), and Suzume (2022).
The wave of Toho’s acquisitions is part of its plans to strengthen the planning and development of attractive content and IP creation, while also expanding its overseas business. This is based on the company’s corporate strategy named TOHO VISION 2032. It has identified four key focus areas as its growth strategy: Planning & IP, Animation, Digital, and Overseas.
CoMix Wave Films is an animation studio established in 2007 after it split from CoMix Wave Inc. The studio is best known for its work on Makoto Shinkai’s projects.
