Kyoto Animation announced an anime adaptation of Keiichi Arawi’s CITY manga, slated to air in 2025. Arawi is best know as the author of Nichijou: My Ordinary Life and the CITY series is considered a successor to it. Taichi Ishidate (Violet Evergarden, A Silent Voice) will be directing the anime. This is the studio’s first new project in six years.
Kyoto Animation produced the anime adaptation of the Nichijou: My Ordinary Life anime in 2006. Tatsuya Ishihara directed it alongside the Nichijou Episode 0 OVA in 2011. The cast for the CITY: The Animation anime includes:
- Mikako Komatsu
- Aki Toyosaki
- Yui Ishikawa
CITY was serialized in Kodansha’s Morning magazine from 2018 to 2021. It ended with 168 chapters, compiled in 18 volumes. Vertical licensed it in English and describes the plot as:
Midori is in a bit of a bind. She is in debt, and her landlady is trying to shake her down for unpaid rent. Her best friend refuses to loan her cash since she’s wised up to her tricks. Maybe some bullying would help. Or a bit of petty theft? Neither is sustainable. Maybe getting a job would settle things… But working means less time for fun adventures in the big city…
The CITY anime announcement came during the Kyoto Animation 2025 New Release Lineup program, narrated by Daisuke Ono. In addition to this adaptation, a new movie project from Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid series was announced.
