One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda has confirmed that the Weekly Shonen Jump Editorial Department’s Junya Fukuda (Jujutsu Kaisen, Black Clover) has succeeded Kaito Anayama as the series’ editor. Via VIZ’s Mangaka Musings, Oda’s message in the latest WSJ 2025 Issue 9 reads, “I got a new editor! Thanks for everything, Anayama-san! Welcome to the team, Fukuda-san!”

Anayama served as editor from February 2023 to January 2025. Oda had similarly announced his appointment in a straightforward fashion, “My manga editor has changed! Iwasaki-san, thank you for a wonderful three years! Anayama-san, let’s get to work!”
Fans may remember Anayama from the viral episode of Kamaitachi’s variety show when they visited WSJ’s office, revealing that he knew the ending of One Piece. Ironically, Fukuda was also in the same episode, similarly saying that he knew the ending of Jujutsu Kaisen.
Unlike the outspoken Shonen Jump editor Kazuhiko Torishima (Dragon Ball, Dr. Slump) and Akio Iyoku (V Jump Editor-in-Chief, former head of the Dragon Ball Room), most editors and supervising staff typically remain in the background, making it difficult to know how Fukuda’s appointment will affect One Piece — if at all considering the size and length of the series.
Editorial roles can include removing hurdles to missing deadlines, providing story ideas and guidance, handling personal affairs, and broadening the creator’s worldview, as seen when Shonen Jump+’s Shihei Lin sent Dandadan‘s Yukinobu Tatsu “100 copies of shoujo manga” to help him draw a romantic comedy (via Nikkei XTrend).

An editor’s role often also includes liaising between the manga creator and the anime’s production staff for adaptations. As an editor of Jujutsu Kaisen, the anime’s second season credited Fukuda for Planning Cooperation alongside other WSJ Editorial Department members Hiroyuki Nakano, Kohei Onishi, Yu Saito, and Tatsuhiko Katayama, who has previously also been credited as an editor-in-charge of Jujutsu Kaisen.

Fans can read One Piece, now edited by Fukuda, on Manga PLUS and the Shonen Jump app. The former describes the series:
“As a child, Monkey D. Luffy was inspired to become a pirate by listening to the tales of the buccaneer “Red-Haired” Shanks. But Luffy’s life changed when he accidentally ate the Gum-Gum Devil Fruit and gained the power to stretch like rubber…at the cost of never being able to swim again! Years later, still vowing to become the king of the pirates, Luffy sets out on his adventure…one guy alone in a rowboat, in search of the legendary “One Piece,” said to be the greatest treasure in the world…“
