Komi Can’t Communicate manga officially ended today after 8 years and 8 months of serialization. The manga was previously confirmed to be entering its ‘final part,’ with the last two chapters releasing in the following two weeks. The final chapter was given a special treatment with a cover illustration and opening color pages in this week’s issue of Weekly Shonen Sunday.
Komi Can’t Communicate is a Japanese manga written and drawn by Tomohiko Oda. Shogakukan serialized in their Weekly Shonen Sunday from May 18, 2016 to January 29, 2025. It has 36 volumes in circulation as of January 17. The cover and release date of the final volume, Volume 37, has not been revealed yet. Viz Media licensed the manga in English, and they describe the story:
The journey to 100 friends begins with a single conversation. Socially anxious high school student Shoko Komi’s greatest dream is to make some friends, but everyone at school mistakes her crippling social anxiety for cool reserve! With the whole student body keeping their distance and Komi unable to utter a single word, friendship might be forever beyond her reach. Timid Tadano is a total wallflower, and that’s just the way he likes it. He lives to blend in with the background. All that changes when he finds himself alone in a classroom on the first day of high school with the legendary Komi. He quickly realizes she isn’t aloof, she’s just super awkward. Now he’s made it his mission to help her on her quest to make 100 friends!
The series got numerous adaptations. One of them was a live-action TV drama which ran for 8 episodes from September to November 2021, while the TV anime adaptation by studio OLM got two seasons.
