Hatsune Miku Anime Film Heads to the U.S. in April GKIDS Release

COLORFUL STAGE! The Movie: A Miku Who Can’t Sing is based on the globally popular rhythm game HATSUNE MIKU: COLORFUL STAGE, first released in 2020 and racking up over 10 million global users in its first two years. The film premiered on January 17 in Japan, coming second in its opening weekend behind only Gundam. It has since grossed over 570 million yen.

GKIDS’ acquisition of COLORFUL STAGE! The Movie: A Miku Who Can’t Sing marks its first collaboration with the film’s production company, CyberAgent. It follows CyberAgent’s recent expansion of its overseas operations, relaunching its subsidiary CyberAgent America (CA America) with a new structure; CA America’s recently stated aims are collaborating with media and platforms to promote its anime productions online and through events. CyberAgent is also producing APOCALYPSE HOTEL, announced a booth for The Summer Hikaru Died at AnimeJapan 2025 and is reportedly producing an anime adaptation of Kagurabachi with Shochiku. Shochiku is distributing the COLORFUL STAGE! in Japan.

COLORFUL STAGE! The Movie: A Miku Who Can’t Sing is an original story following Hoshino Ichika, a high school musician. In addition to the film’s original characters, the movie also features the main cast and Virtual Singer performers of the original game, with the voice cast of the original game returning to their respective roles for the film.

You can check out the film’s theme song “Hajimari no Mirai” by 40mP and sasakure.UK featuring vocals by Hatsune Miku. The ending song “Worlders” was performed by Jin, along with an arrangement of the ending song by the popular producer TeddyLoid. It will be sung by all 26 characters of the original game.

GKIDS officially gives the following film synopsis:
Ichika is a high school musician who can enter a mysterious place called “SEKAI,” where she and her friends express their innermost emotions through music alongside Hatsune Miku. One day after giving a live performance, Ichika meets a new Miku that she has never seen before. No matter how hard this new Miku tries to sing, she struggles connecting with the hearts of her listeners. Miku must rely on the help of others to find a way to sing again.

COLORFUL STAGE! The Movie: A Miku Who Can’t Sing follows GKIDS’ acquisition of Hideaki Anno’s LOVE & POP, WITCH WATCH: WATCH PARTY, and Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX: Beginning, which premieres on February 28.
