Comments from the creator and voice actors were also revealed:
Aki Akimoto (Original Creator):
“Mechanical Marie” is getting an anime! It’s all thanks to the many people who supported this project and to the readers who loved it. I’m truly excited to see Marie and the rest of the characters come to life with voices and animation. I can’t thank the anime staff enough. I hope those who’ve read the original and newcomers alike will enjoy this anime!”
Nao Toyama (Marie):
On the appeal of the story:
“The story is a wacky rom-com! The thrill of a romance that grows under the rule ‘no one must find out I’m human’ really keeps your heart racing. There’s danger at every turn, yet there are these peaceful, heartwarming moments that make you smile. Most of all, the sense of wanting to care for someone and being cared for—it’s truly touching.”
On playing Marie:
“Although Marie appears expressionless, her inner emotions are full of joy, anger, sorrow, and delight. She’s always doing her best, and it’s so endearing. While people may say she’s like a robot, what lies at her core is warm, kind, and genuine. Her growing feelings for Arthur are pure and beautiful—I want to portray her with care and tenderness.”
Haruki Ishiya (Arthur):
On the appeal of the story:
“Marie may seem emotionless, but her heart is very human. Arthur, who hides behind a metaphorical mask and cannot trust people, slowly opens up to her. Despite the serious world they live in, the story is portrayed with a vibrant and comical flair thanks to the colorful supporting cast. The moments when the two let down their guard and show true feelings—it captures the essence of love. Also, Marie is just so cute. Seriously cute. (Important!)”
On playing Arthur:
“Even though it’s a comedic role, I want to keep Arthur’s core grounded. He has a cool side but also shows adorable sides, especially around Marie. He’s full of emotion, changing expressions quickly throughout the episodes. I hope to tap into all my acting range for this role. Personally, I haven’t often played this kind of main character before, so I’m really excited.”
Mechanical Marie (Kikaijikake no Marie) was originally published as a one-shot in Hakusensha’s LaLa shojo manga magazine in March 2020, after which it was serialized in the same magazine from June 2020 to June 2023. Its chapters were collected into a total of six compiled volumes.
The official synopsis:
“Finally complete. Meet Marie, the mechanical maid.”
Once a genius martial artist, Marie is a human girl who now hides her identity and works undercover as a
“mechanical maid” in the mansion of Arthur, the heir to a powerful conglomerate who despises humans.
—If her true identity is discovered, it’s instant execution!?
Taking advantage of her naturally expressionless face, Marie flawlessly fulfills her duties as a “mechanical
maid” while secretly protecting Arthur from the assassins constantly targeting his life.
But things get complicated when the smitten Arthur, who dotes on Marie, comes dangerously close to
discovering her secret! Every day is a nerve-wracking mix of thrills and close calls!
