Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that it will stop producing physical game discs for all new PlayStation releases beginning in January 2028.

According to the official statement from Sony, games launching from January 2028 onward will be available digitally through the PlayStation Store and participating retailers that sell digital game codes. The company clarified that the change only applies to new releases after the cutoff date. Games released before January 2028 in physical format will not be affected.

Sony said the decision reflects changing consumer behavior, with digital purchases now significantly outpacing physical media across the gaming industry.

The company added that ending physical disc production will allow it to “align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today.”

The announcement does not affect existing physical games or titles scheduled to launch before January 2028. It also does not mention changes to PlayStation console hardware, meaning current disc-compatible systems will continue to support previously released physical games.

The move follows years of steady growth in digital game sales across the industry. Sony has increasingly emphasized digital distribution through its PlayStation Store, subscription services like PlayStation Plus, and the release of Digital Edition console variants.

The announcement is also likely to renew debate around digital game ownership and long-term preservation. Critics of all-digital releases have raised concerns that games can become unavailable if they are delisted or if online services are discontinued, making long-term access less certain than with physical copies.
