Comments from Pokémon GO developer and senior vice-president at Niantic, Ed Wu, assure fans that the game is safe for another 10 years. Investment is set to continue, as Wu says to Eurogamer, “It’s bananas to think this thing is going to be going into its next decade soon. It’s not only healthy, but it’s growing. And we’re putting a lot of investment into ensuring it’s a great game and has really firm foundations for the next 10 years.“
Wu continued, “As we gear up for that 10th anniversary, we want a refresh that’s befitting that next decade,” he continues. “We’re refreshing our avatar system next with a more improved experience, updated assets – a modern system that can offer more customisation.“
Readers will likely remember Pokémon GO gamers swarming major parks and landmarks, making it hard to imagine how current success could compare. Wu disagrees, saying the recent GO Tour was their most successful week ever by many metrics, and that reports that Pokémon GO‘s revenue is decreasing are far from the truth:
“When we see third-party reports on Pokémon GO [revenue] decreasing, I can say, very clearly, that they are wrong. And we know they are wrong because they don’t have access to that data. They don’t have visibility into non-mobile numbers. Pokémon GO grew last year, including last spring.“
The Pokémon franchise is looking ahead to another massive decade, turning 30 in a few years. On the anime front, Pokémon Horizons‘ protagonists, Liko and Roy return to screens on April 12 for the new “Terastal Debut” arc. The latest trailer and opening theme song, “Will” by IVE, was recently released and follows the new cast members reveal for the Elite Four. An upcoming game titled Pokémon Legends: Z-A also got a release window last month.
Pokémon GO developer Niantic officially describes the game:
