Buncololi and Kakuyomu’s Sasaki to Pii-chan has been self-published on Shosetsuka ni Narou since December 2018 and was picked up in Media Factory’s MF Bunko J in January 2021. The light novel series has since been collected in 7 volumes. The Sasaki and Peeps anime was first announced on July 24, 2022, at MF Bunko J’s Summer School Festival event alongside an announcement trailer. The cast was also announced, including Tomokazu Sugita (Gintoki in Gintama) and Aoi Yuki (Tanya in The Saga of Tanya the Evil) as Sasaki and Peeps, respectively. The Sasaki and Peeps additional cast and teaser visual were revealed in July 2023, which included Rie Takahashi and Akari Kito. Mirai Minato will direct Sasaki and Peeps, with Deko Akao doing the series composition. Saori Nakashiki is doing the character designs and Bit Groove Promotion is in charge of the sound work.
Yen Press licensed the light novel for English releases and describes the plot of Volume 1 as:
Tired and unfulfilled by his dead-end job, Sasaki decides to adopt Peeps, an adorable pet Java sparrow. Peeps, however, is really Piercarlo, a powerful sage from another world! After Peeps bestows Sasaki with magic and the ability to cross worlds, the two decide to export household items for profit in pursuit of a leisurely lifestyle. But when Sasaki’s new magic gets him mixed up in a whole other kind of supernatural struggle back in Japan, will it destroy his chances at realizing the relaxing life of his dreams?
