The official Haikyu!! X (formerly Twitter) account revealed that Haikyu!! the Movie: Decisive Battle at the Garbage Dump scored a three-day box office opening of 2.23 billion yen ($14.86 million), opening at #1 in Japan. This was despite its premiere on February 16, 2024 being a weekday.
Oricon put these numbers into perspective, revealing that Haikyu!!‘s box office opening puts it among the all-time biggest Japanese titles. Haikyu!! equaled One Piece Film: Red‘s opening (2.2 billion yen) and placed just below Jujutsu Kaisen 0‘s opening of 2.6 billion yen (~$17.32 million).
Eiga Ranking News also puts the opening as the fifth-largest in Japanese history. Haikyu!!‘s box office can also be compared with the recent Spy x Family Code: White, which made 1.2 billion yen across its first three days of release. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train is still far and away the leader, however, with 4.6 billion yen (~$30.66 million).
Nevertheless, Code: White and Mugen Train‘s initial theater rollouts were much higher, at 432 and 403 theaters, respectively, while Toho’s official theater list puts Decisive Battle at the Garbage Dump‘s number at 373 theaters.
Haikyu!! the Movie: Decisive Battle at the Garbage Dump is directed by Susumu Mitsunaka, who directed most of the four anime TV seasons. Production I.G returned to animate the movie. The movie is the first of two adapting the final volumes of Haruichi Furudate’s Haikyu!! manga. The series was published in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump from 2012 to 2020.
