Earlier this month, Japanese outlet The River hosted a conversation between Studio Trigger co-founder Hiroyuki Imaishi and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes director, Wes Ball (also of the Maze Runner trilogy), designed to “transcend the boundaries between Hollywood movies and Japanese anime.” The pair discussed their careers, Ball’s love for Gurren Lagann, and differences between working environments, and even joked over a potential Planet of the Apes anime series. When Ball asked what Imaishi was working on currently, he revealed that he was working on a comedy series, stating:
“I’m currently working on a comedy for the first time in a while. I can’t officially reveal the title yet, but it should be available overseas.“

Ball also revealed that he didn’t like the original Maze Runner novels and hoped to turn Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes into a trilogy, sparking an interesting conversation between the pair over their attitudes towards sequels and continuations. Similar to what Imaishi said in his interview with Anime Corner, he told Ball he doesn’t “want to hold back” in his works, “so I’ll draw everything. I don’t know if I’ll get an offer next time, so I’ll just do it all (laughs),” he added.
Despite Imaishi’s position on sequels, a continuation of Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt is in development. Nevertheless, it’s technically not a Studio Trigger sequel since Imaishi directed it at Gainax. The story centers on the “Anarchy Sisters” Panty and Stocking, who were kicked out of heaven for their many sins. Banished to Daten City, they’re supported by their questionable preacher boss Garterbelt in exorcising evil in exchange for a ticket back to Heaven.
Given Imaishi’s record, his upcoming comedy project will likely take place at Studio Trigger. Still, we may see the iconic animator ply his trade somewhere else, create a short series, or even take on another medium like live-action.
