Crunchyroll's Spring 2025 Necronomico Anime Confirms ChatGPT AI Subtitles in Surprising Error [UPDATED]

The German subtitles for Cygames‘ new original anime, Necronomico and the Cosmic Horror Show, used ChatGPT in the localization, as confirmed in a screenshot where a line read, “ChatGPT said:Wenn ich die Welt von hier an weiter genießen kann,”. You can see the line below.

The German translation also had numerous translation errors, according to viewers. As did the English subtitles. Below are some examples:

Crunchyroll has yet to confirm whether it produced the subtitles. UPDATE: A third-party vendor produced the subtitles for Crunchyroll, which violated the parties’ agreement not to use AI-generated subtitles, according to a person with direct knowledge of the situation. The matter is currently under investigation, and Crunchyroll is working to rectify the error.

Necronomico and the Cosmic Horror Show premiered on July 1. Cygames handled the overseas licensing and is a producer for the anime. Masato Matsune directs the series at Studio Gokumi. The anime is officially described:
Struggling streamer Miko Kurono joins the new VR game “KADATH” to change her fate, after a wave of mysterious incidents where popular streamers collapse during livestreams. She soon discovers the game is a deadly trap by the gods and must survive the unfolding cosmic horror.
