Darwin’s Game is officially getting a live-action film adaptation, with Taishi Nakagawa set to star as protagonist Kaname. The film is scheduled to premiere in Japanese theaters on March 12, 2027, with a teaser visual, teaser trailer, and main cast revealed.
Directed and written by Fumihiko Sori, known for Ping Pong, the live-action Fullmetal Alchemist films, and Hakkenden, the adaptation reimagines the series’ survival game for the big screen.
For the live-action film, Kaname has been reimagined as a university student instead of a high school student. After activating the mysterious Darwin’s Game app, he is thrown into the deadly survival game and must rely on his Sigil, which allows him to recreate and wield any object he has previously touched as a weapon.
Joining Nakagawa are:
- Koki as Shuka, the undefeated “Queen” whose Queen of Thorns Sigil controls chains and wires
- Mei Hata as Rein, a strategist whose Laplace Sigil instantly analyzes and predicts opponents’ movements
- Fuju Kamio as Ryuji, who possesses the True or Lie Sigil
- Koji Yamamoto as Hiiragi, whose Meg Mell Sigil manipulates plants.
Original creators FLIPFLOPs said they encouraged the director not to focus on recreating the manga panel for panel, but instead to make the “strongest film possible,” believing that manga and live-action are fundamentally different mediums. They added that Sori has created “a wonderful Darwin’s Game movie.”
Nakagawa said portraying Kaname gave him a different kind of manga protagonist than roles he has played previously, noting that the production relied heavily on green-screen filming and VFX.
Originally serialized in Bessatsu Shonen Champion from 2012 to 2023, Darwin’s Game follows an ordinary student who is invited to a mysterious mobile application that transforms the real world into a deadly battle royale where players fight using unique supernatural abilities known as Sigils. The manga concluded with 30 volumes and has over 10 million copies in circulation. It also received a 12-episode TV anime adaptation in 2020.
