Hayao Miyazaki Praises His Son's Earwig and the Witch Film

TOHO decided to post a long interview with Hayao Miyazaki in which, among other things, he praises his son. Goro Miyazaki was the director, while Hayao Miyazaki was responsible for the planning and development of the “Earwig and the Witch” movie.

During the interview Hayao Miyazaki praises his son for the work he has done:

I thought Goro wouldn’t measure up, but his fighting spirit exceeded my expectations, and I think the result was quite interesting. I think his use of CG was good. It’s quite a feat. (…) The fact that it was my son doing it is irrelevant. By not drawing with a pencil and doing things in CG instead, he’s been released. That’s what I think.

He also mentioned that the film managed to gather a “strong staff”. What’s more, he says that the film has an interesting story that stays true to the original novel from 2011.

I think it was quite difficult to create this film, to the extent that I truly want to praise everyone without restraint.

The movie was already broadcasted on Japanese television on December 30, 2020, and screened in the United States on February 3, 2021. The movie was also released on HBO Max and had its Blu-ray release on April 6, 2021.

Not every orphan would love living at St. Morwald’s Home for Children, but Earwig does. She gets whatever she wants, whenever she wants it, and it’s been that way since she was dropped on the orphanage doorstep as a baby. Earwig is whisked off to their mysterious house full of invisible rooms, potions, and spell books, with magic around every corner. Most children would run in terror from a house like that . . . but not Earwig. Using her own cleverness—with a lot of help from a talking cat—she decides to show the witch who’s boss.
