Nintendo's Kirby Wins a Grammy Award

During the 64th Annual Grammy Awards, it was announced that a cover of Kirby’s video game song titled “Meta Knight’s Revenge” won the “Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella” award. The honor is received by an independent music group known as The 8-Bit Band, led by Charlie Rosen and Jake Silverman. The cover song is based on the original arrangement created by Button Masher (Jake Silverman.)

The 8-Bit’s cover of Kirby’s “Meta Knight’s Revenge” was able to win over competition such as Chopsticks by Bill O’Connell, For The Love Of A Princess (From “Braveheart”) by Robin Smith, Infinite Love by Emile Mosseri, and The Struggle Within by Gabriela Quintero & Rodrigo Sanchez.

In their acceptance speech, Charlie Rosen and Jake Silverman of The 8-Bit Band also express gratitude to Jun Ishikawa, the original composer behind most of Kirby’s soundtracks, including the recent game, Kirby and the Forgotten Land. It is a memorable night in video game music history for once again reaching a prestigious recognition such as this. The first and last video game song awarded with a Grammy was Civilization IV’s “Baba Yetu back in 2011. You can watch Rosen and Silverman’s Grammy acceptance speech below:
